May 15-31, 2023 was dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of Ion Simionescu, academician and man of culture. The Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu” in Iasi dedicated a documentary exhibition to him, which brings together the most representative works of the academician.
The official opening of the event took place on 16 May 2023, in the B.P. Hasdeu conference room of the library’s headquarters.
The speech was taken by Prof. univ. dr. Tudorel TOADER – Rector of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Prof. univ. dr. Dumitru BULGARIU – “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University / Romanian Academy, Conf. univ. dr. Ioan MILICĂ – General Director of BCU “Mihai Eminescu”, and by drd. Ioan-Gabriel CHIRAȘ, curator of the exhibition, from the Collections Conservation Department of BCU Iasi. They highlighted both the life and the academic merits of the university professor.
It is known that Ion Simionescu had as tutors honorable personalities such as Grigore Cobălcescu and Petru Poni. He acquired a specialization in Geology, as a result of a scholarship that laid the foundations for his remarkable academic career in Vienna. Although his merits were internationally recognized, he chose to bring to the present day the model of the teacher dedicated to the Romanian academic community, being professor at the Department of Mineralogy of the University of Iasi and, later, dean of the Faculty of Sciences, in 1910.
His career was not limited only to the university environment, being distinguished as a member of parliament, as well as by the positions he held in the Ministry of Education.
The scholar’s talents were also put to good use during his term as President of the Romanian Academy, to which he dedicated the last years of his life.
The exhibition was well attended, both at the opening event and throughout the period 15-31 May 2023.
