Book exhibition “The city of Iași – history and legend”

“There are Romanians who have never been to Iași, although none should be, because those who have not been here cannot read the pages of the most beautiful chronicles with understanding, cannot properly penetrate the spirit of our past which live in this place more alive and richer than anywhere else […]. There would be a lack in their national consciousness if they had not seen the city that was, and still proudly calls itself today, the capital of Moldova…”

Nicolae Iorga

The story of the city of Iași, written between history and legend, was revealed on Monday, 07.11.2022, at the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library, on the occasion of the opening of the book exhibition “The city of Iași – history and legend”.

Mr. Dr. Mihai Mîrza, adviser at the Romanian National Archives, Iași branch, highlighted the historical value of the documents and pieces on display, masterfully pointing out moments from the cultural evolution of Iași.

Between November 7-11, in the exhibition space at the library’s headquarters, visitors could admire vintage images and books signed by guests of these countries. Volumes related to the old printing house in Iași were also exhibited.

The first book printed in Romanian, in Moldova, Cazania lui Varlaam, stood out, an important testimony of the evolution of Romanian society, which has endured over time since 1643, when it saw the light of the printing press.

Thanks to the opening proposed within the Project “Restoration and rehabilitation of the historical monument building “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library” Iași”, financed by SEE Grants 2014-2021, within the RO-CULTURE Program, a diverse and numerous audience showed their interest in exhibition. Not only representatives of the academic environment, librarians and people of culture participated, but also the most curious people.
