The exhibition “Tabs from the history of the Library” highlights part of the rich and long history of the Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu” Iasi. The exhibition is part of the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library Days in Iasi (6-11 November 2023) and is part of the calendar of activities of the Project “Restoration and rehabilitation of the historical building of the “Mihai Eminescu” Central University Library in Iasi”. It brings to the public’s attention important moments in the prestigious history of the institution: the foundation of the Vasilian Academy (1640) and its library, the modern organization of the library within the framework of the Mihai Eminescu Academy (1835) and the establishment as a library of the first university in the country (1860), the unification of the document collections with those of the library of the University Foundation “King Ferdinand I” (1948) and the prodigious development that followed in the second half of the 20th century. Visitors will be able to admire books from the library’s priceless treasury, as well as documents reflecting the life of the institution and its servants in a time of reorganisation and change. The ex-libris stamp of the library from its various “ages”, which rests on the pages of the volumes, testifies to the long and winding road travelled by the institution and its collections, and is also a testimony to the endurance of this cultural institution.
The opening will take place on 8 November at 12 noon in the exhibition space on the first floor of the headquarters. Prof. Alexandru Călinescu, director of the Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu” in Iasi during 2000-2013, will speak.
The exhibition is organized by the Special Collections and Conservation of Collections departments.
