Book exhibition `Ion Simionescu – 150`

The Central University Library “Mihai Eminescu” Iasi organizes, from 15 to 31 May 2023, at its headquarters (4 Păcurari Street), the documentary exhibition “Ion Simionescu – 150”, dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the birth of the Romanian academician, university professor and man of rare erudition.
The exhibition includes a generous “picture” of the scientist’s life and work, as well as a classification by field of some of his most representative works.
 
The official opening will take place on Monday, May 15, 2023, at 12:00, in the “B. P. Hasdeu” Hall (1st floor). Guests: Prof. Dr. Tudorel TOADER – Rector of “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University, Prof. Dr. Dumitru BULGARIU – “Alexandru Ioan Cuza” University / Romanian Academy, Iasi Branch, Prof. Sabina Elvira Maria MANEA – Principal, “Ion Simionescu” Secondary School.
The exhibition is realized by the Department of Conservation of Collections.

*** Ion Simionescu was born on 10 July 1873 in Fîntînele, Bacău county. Left without parents at an early age, he moved to Botoșani, where he was raised by his grandmother. After graduating from high school, he studied at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of the University of Iasi, being tutored by professors such as Petru Poni and Grigore Cobălcescu. He continued his academic career in Vienna (1895), when as a fellow of the Romanian Academy he began to specialize in Geology. The year 1898 was also the year he obtained his doctorate in this field. Returning to the country in 1899, he entered the Department of Mineralogy of the University of Iași by competitive examination. The following years were crowned with multiple recognitions of his work. He was successively appointed full professor (1905), dean of the Faculty of Sciences (1910), full member of the Romanian Academy (1911), rector (1912 and 1923), deputy (1919), professor at the University of Bucharest (1929), president of the Romanian Academy (1940). He passed away on January 7, 1944, being until his last moment dedicated to the culturalization of the masses and the training of specialists in any field.
